Antarctica is hiring people to live and work at research stations for months at a time, in one of the most isolated places on Earth. You do not need to be a scientist.

Programs regularly hire:

  • Trades and technical staff (electricians, plumbers, carpenters, mechanics, steel erectors)

  • Support and operations (chefs, station leaders, IT specialists, vehicle and boat operators, field training/mountaineers)

  • Medical staff (doctors and nurses)

Certain roles can also pay more than £100 000 once Antarctic allowances are included.

But honestly, the money almost feels secondary. Applicants need relevant trade or professional experience and must clear strict medical, dental, and psychological evaluations due to the harsh isolation. Imagine stepping away from normal life for a while and waking up every day surrounded by ice, mountains and almost complete silence. No traffic. No usual routine. Just a small group of people living at the edge of the worldand doing work that actually matters there. It feels less like taking a job and more like temporarily entering a completely different life.

If you are looking for a job that feels meaningful, you can see the list of jobs and applications here through the Australian Antarctic Division Jobs Portal

and here: UK-based vacancies are listed on the British Antarctic Survey Careers Page
